Renovating your Library - 2007/04/19 17:36 Being a medical student and avid reader, I was at a loss for what to do with the piles of books scattered around my otherwise bare floors. The solution? Target, Amazon.com and a few short hours!

I piled the books into three piles: 1)Can't part with 2) Old textbooks and 3)borrowed from other people

Target had four-foot bookshelves for $19.99/each that took care of all those sentimental keepers

Amazon.com allowed me to sell some of my old textbooks and forgotten novels for an unexpected $150 profit

The profit allowed me to purchase some Thinking of You/Thank you cards for the remaining borrowed gifts

Final Result: Library renovated and a pleasantly surprising extra $100!!!

Re:Renovating your Library - 2007/04/21 03:18 I can't believe you made that much on Amazon. My books hardly sell. What did you do differently?

Re:Renovating your Library - 2007/04/25 18:01 I made sure that I charged more for the most current editions of all textbooks. If I had an older edition, I would undercut whatever the lowest posted price was.

I would also write fairly descriptive captions for each book. I try not to write in books and many of my books were barely used. That way I could select the "Like New" category for the book description.

Other than that, I just listed a lot of books and hoped for the best!

Re:Renovating your Library - 2007/05/02 16:00 I too am a big Amazon.com book seller. I started selling books in the Summer of 05. I have sold over $1,000 worth now I believe. My biggest selling periods are right before a new scool semester starts. I recently did an overhaul of my library and finally decided to part with my engineering books from college. (I mean I'm a lawyer now right, so the books are more dust collectors than anything). I went to school in the late 90s and honestly did not expect hte books to sell but they sold immediately. One thing that I do caution is that there are a lot of bogus listings by volume booksellers which are intended to undercut prices (i.e. force you to lower your prices on the books). This is the Wal-mart effect. In one case I found that my book, whose price I had lowered based on some low prices was actually bought by a campus bookseller. Thus it seems as though they often list books at unrealistically low prices so that they can buy them off of unspecting sellers and re-sell them.

Anyway I have found that my biggest sales come from used textbooks and also relationship/self help books. I have not tried to sell any children's books yet. I will try those next and report back.

And for books that are unsellable there are book donation companies that will pick up books for you. One that I know of in Massachusetts is called "Got Books" www.gotbooks.com
